    We spend a lot of time talking about the importance of a good domain and a great advertising message. We do that because they are the biggest problems stopping most online businesses from attaining success.

    What everyone wants to talk about is how to get massive amounts of “free” traffic. The idea is that if they can get enough free traffic, they don’t have to worry about their advertising message as much. They can overcome their poor message with massive amounts of traffic.     They are wrong. If you think like that, then you are wrong. It is as simple as that. How do I know?

    I have done vast statistical studies of successful and unsuccessful online businesses. The domain matters. The message matters. Most successful businesses don’t even focus very much on traffic and focus even less on “free traffic.” They hire an advertising agency (like us) to manage their paid traffic from very conventional sources. Viral effects take care of the rest. The only exception is that most successful companies have embraced blogging as a way to connect with more customers and connect with them in a more engaging way.

    Those are just the facts. If you want to have a successful Internet business, you need to follow the data and the numbers, not the opinions on some forum or the opinions of unsuccessful online businesses. Free traffic is NOT the answer.

    In fact, there is no such thing as “free” traffic. That term simply means traffic that you pay for with time rather than with money. If you hire someone to spend their time, then it isn’t free at all. If you do it yourself, then you are limited by the number of hours in a day. You are in competition with hundreds of thousands of other “free traffic” enthusiasts and many of them are willing to work for $1 an hour or less. At best, you might be able to eventually earn $50K per year if you are really good and work 20 hours per day and 7 days per week.

    That is just reality. We have surveyed and studied thousands of online businesses. That is really the way it works.

    Successful business owners do two things very differently than unsuccessful business owners. Here is the breakdown:

    Unsuccessful business owners:

    1. Spend their time trying to chase more visitors (traffic) using free methods.

    2. Pay for trivial things like software and ebooks to help them get more traffic by basically spamming others.

    Successful business owners:

    1. Pay others to manage things like advertising budgets and advertising.

    2. Spend their time focusing on their business vision and message.

    There is no such thing as “FREE” traffic. It is a myth. You can waste all of your time trying to chase it and watching meaningless numbers.
