It is rare that we publish business advice that isn’t backed up by solid data including a statistical analysis of profitable and unprofitable businesses.
This post will be an exception to that rule, but I think the subject is so obvious that it doesn’t require a study.
What email address do you use when you do business on the Internet?
What email address do your customers see when you answer a support issue?
What email address do your potential business partners see when you post a blog comment on their blog?
What email address did you use to request a website evaluation from us?
If you answered that you used something like:
shellygull@yourdomain.com
- or -
support@yourdomain.com
That’s great! That is what successful businesses do. If you get an email from Google, Yahoo, IBM, Apple or any other successful online business, you can bet that email will be hosted on the domain of the company in question.
If you use a Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail or other freebie email address… then you simply aren’t serious about doing business on the Internet. Now is the time to change that. Get serious and show that you are serious by setting up and using an email address on your own domain!
That goes for @aol.com, @comcast.com or any other ISP provided email address. Use those for chatting with your grandmother. They are not appropriate for business use!
The only appropriate email address for business use is one that ends with your own domain name.
Does that seem obvious to you? It did to us too.
But amazingly, over 90% of the web-site evaluation requests that we receive every day use a freebie email address or an ISP email address. The scores received by those web-sites reflect their choice of an email address. They aren’t very good. That means they aren’t yet profitable.
Do you want to take a major step toward profitability with your business? Don’t be like them. Set up a email address on your own domain today.
Then use it!
